Case Study: MTL - Motorcycle iPhone App

The Brief:

Racing Superbikes is an exciting business, but for many riders keeping track of the bikes various engine and suspension settings for different circuits often involved scribbling disorganised and messy notes on bits of paper that invariably ended up lost or mislaid.

We were tasked with creating an iPhone app that not only allowed them to be stored in a highly organized fashion, but one that allowed the most useful data to be selectively recalled.

The Solution:

In view of the complexity of the requirements, the challenge was to design an app that would allow users to record and store lots of data but with a simple interface and one that avoided typing lots of information which is often a clumsy affair on a smartphone.

We also recognised that providing a ‘template’ solution for the apps framework would be inappropriate. This type of motorcycle iPhone app would have to provide a means of data entry and storage that different users (for eg those participating in road or off-road bike trackdays) could customise according to their specific testing requirements and their particular brand and model of racing motorcycle.

In terms of potential sales, we felt that the initial plan to create a bike app solely around motorcycle racing would be a limiting factor. We proposed modifying the basic code (which could be done without significant cost) to provide additional versions for car and kart racers who also test and record data in a similar fashion.

Conclusion:

The application is used successfully by motorsport enthusiasts and professionals across North and South America, Europe and many other parts of the world. Customer feedback has been excellent with the app rated at five stars in the UK app store. Future updates are planned including a version fully compatible with the iPad.

In addition, many users have been in touch with proposals for their own motorsport related iPhone and iPad applications.
